Lowry was reported to have said to a college – “She had a very nice face, and quite a big beard. Well sir, I just couldn’t let an opportunity pass, so I began almost at once to make
a little drawing of her on a piece of paper”.
As reported in the Guardian, it was described as sordid and Lowry’s response was “But I am very fond of sordid pictures,” he told his friend.
Lowry, a recluse who called even those he knew well “sir”, felt an echo of his own loneliness in the woman.
